The 22nd Virginia Battalion Infantry, Company G was founded by John Zak in October 1980. The unit was formed in memory of Private
John C. Gardner of Company G.
Bylaws
Military Membership: Minimum age for enlistment is sixteen (16) years of age. Participants under the age of eighteen are required to have signed parental consent to participate. (Less than sixteen years of age members are asked to participate as musicians.) To carry a musket under the age of eighteen, the participant MUST possess a New York State hunter safety certificate and have signed parental consent.
Civilian Membership: There is no minimum age requirement for civilian members. Members under the age of eighteen are required to have signed parental consent to participate.
Membership applications must be filled out and signed by all members of the 22nd Virginia Battalion Company G. New recruits must submit an application before participating as a new member. Existing members must submit a new application annually by January 31st of each year or else they will be dropped from the roster of the unit.
Membership Dues: Membership dues will be at a cost of $25.00 per household address. Membership dues are to cover administrative costs of the unit. Dues will be used primarily for the following: monthly newsletter, liability insurance coverage, maintaining of the company trailer, and maintaining web site (www.22ndva.com). Dues are due by no later than January 31st of each year. If dues are not paid by this time and a Staff member has not been contacted than the member will be dropped from the roster of the unit.
All members must be completely uniformed and equipped authentically within one year in accordance with current unit policy. No individual will be allowed on the field without proper gear.

All members’ equipment MUST be marked with name, unit and unit number.
All musket barrels must be bright and free of all bluing agents.
All company equipment must be returned to the company trailer and company cabin following every event.
No women may portray soldiers within the ranks of the 22nd Virginia Battalion Infantry, Company G, unless they are able to completely hide their female features and are unable to be detected at a distance of 10 feet. The Commanding Officer will make the final decision on allowing the individual female into the Military ranks.
All members must sign the annual membership application which states that they have read the by-laws and agree to abide by the said by-laws.
NCOs of the unit shall be designated Safety Representatives of the unit. They will be responsible for ensuring that all members are adequately trained as well as safe on the field. NCOs will operate under the direction of the Safety Leader (Sergeant Major).
At all unit functions, all members will observe and follow rules and regulations of the host unit.

Military Code of Conduct
At scheduled events, ALL members will be in uniform and proper military attire once camp has been established.
While in uniform, NO modern anachronisms whatsoever will be tolerated.
All members will (at least) wear an authentic shirt, trousers, and shoes at all times while at events, unless otherwise directed. Whenever leaving camp members MUST wear their hat as well as either a vest or shell jacket.
While in uniform, all instructions given by the Officers and NCOs will be obeyed promptly and without question. Absolutely no orders or instructions will be given that are considered improper or hazardous to your personal safety.
Members will be expected to take part in various details common to soldier life, such as chopping wood, water details, guard duty or other camp duties pertaining to period army life.
Non commissioned officers will be respected in accordance to the post in which they serve. The company NCOs are under the direct command of the Company officers and therefore will be obeyed.
While in camp and in uniform all officers and NCOs will be addressed by their rank. Officers may also be addressed as Sir.
When under arms, the strictest compliance with military bearing courtesy and etiquette will be observed in accordance with the military regulations of the period.
All weapons will be maintained in a proper military manner during events. All weapons will be properly cleaned in the evening following battles or the following morning before inspections. Failure to maintain weapons properly will jeopardize participation on the field. Reoccurring safety offenses will be grounds for immediate dismissal from the field until properly retrained.
In the field, all members will be present for all scheduled musters and formations. Chronic absenteeism will not be tolerated. Members are required to take part in drill exercises and are expected to be familiar with the Gilhams Manual – School of the Soldier as well as the unit’s history record.
All commissioned officers of the army you are representing, regardless of unit, will be saluted and accorded proper military respect.
The use of side arms is limited to Officers and Staff personnel. Use of side arms by enlisted men is prohibited.
All non period items must be kept out of site at all times in period camps.
At the conclusion of each day’s activities, a formation will be held and the unit will be dismissed until the next day’s formation unless otherwise directed. At such time, a general relaxation of normal discipline and military demeanor will be permitted. However, basic military respect and conduct should always be observed.

Civilian Guidelines
NO obvious 21st century anachronisms permitted, i.e. No modern eyeglasses, No modern wristwatches,
No modern type jewelry i.e. post earrings (exceptions to this rule are wedding and engagement rings) and No zippers, snaps, Velcro.
NO obvious 21st century make-up including eyeliner and eye shadow, colored lipstick, blusher, and NO nail polish (colored or clear) will be permitted.
Period dress is required in authentic camps at all times. Those wearing non-authentic or period attire will not be allowed within period camps.
All children under the age of 16 are required to be under parental or guardian supervision. Children will not be left unattended at any time. Children under the age of 18 are under the direct supervision of the Civilian Coordinator and Assistant Civilian Coordinator.
Obvious synthetics are prohibited: no nylon net, double knits, modern denims, etc.
Women over 17 years of age need to have their arms, shoulders, chests, and hands covered during the day. Boat necklines and short sleeves are acceptable for children only. T-Bodice is acceptable after 3pm only.
Proper undergarments are expected. Some allowances may be made for especially hot days, or for women just starting the hobby.
NO loose, flowing hair. Unconfined hair is acceptable only on children. Bangs need to be brushed back from face and parted in the middle. Sausage curls were worn only by young teens and dated older women.
ABSOLUTELY no cigarette smoking in camp or public.
Camps will not be left unattended. Fires and candle lanterns will also not be left unattended. A designated person will be detailed to remain in camp and oversee the area at all times.
Respectable ladies may have had a light dusting of rice powder, which was proper for the period, on their faces.
Gentlemen should wear a hat, waistcoat or jacket whenever leaving camp. A cravat or neck tie is also recommended.
NO obvious 20th or 21st century footwear: No sneakers, sandals, jellies, open toed shoes, flip-flops, or pumps.
NO bare legs, nylons, knee-highs or panty hose.
When leaving camp, ladies must have a bonnet on their head. No proper woman appeared in public without a bonnet. Ladies should also be escorted when leaving the Civilian Camp. If no gentlemen are available to escort, then two or more ladies may travel together.
Civilians need a pass and proper clearance to enter military camps during the day.
Ladies hair must be confined in a hair net; hairnets were mostly black, not white. Colored snoods are discouraged.
INFANTS: All children in diapers, whether a boy or girl will be in dresses and bonnets. If in disposable diapers, a cloth diaper must be pinned over that diaper, and white leotards. If bottle-fed, you must wrap the bottle in a cloth, so the plastic does not show.
All civilians are expected to set up and maintain the civilian camp. Civilians are expected to take part in camp duties such as chopping / gathering wood, water details, cooking company sponsored meals and maintaining civilian camp in proper order.
No sneakers for children or babies. You can use little black boots or white high top shoes.
For your own and others enrichment, a true effort should be made to remain in period
dress at all times. These are general guidelines. We do try to be flexible and will be
